I find myself more and more tempted to sleep instead of look out the window. Familiarity of the route, the noise of the wheels on the track and the whistle lull me into a sense of complacency. I am finding that photos of the beautiful (sunrise on the dunes and surf) are becoming boring. I am being drawn to the decrepit - the parts that as a tourist I push under so that I might remember the beautiful. I switch back and forth across the isle so that I can see graffiti and strip malls clearly from both sides of the train...

Criss Cross
PROJECT INFORMATION:
I teach art in Los Angeles and have been living in San Luis Obispo since July. Once a week I commute each way by train on the Amtrak Surfliner. This project is an attempt to capture and document my journey with photographs, mental wanderings and train trivia.I enjoy the 'snap-shot' like quality that happens as when I use my point and shoot Cannon camera (the reflections and blurring of the foreground, etc.). Taking photos on every ride functions not only as a travel log, but an observation of the changing landscape over a nine month period of time. This spatial-temporal study is a montage of a year of my life looking out of a train window.
